Gallo Report: 3 Strikes Model Passes EC Parliament

No doubt, there are various views and opinions on how to meet the challenge of updating copyright (standing for all aspects of intellectual property rights) to be fit for the digital age:
Some people think that well conducted educational campaigns will help to increase the level of ethic awareness when downloading copyright protected content without authorisation. Others point out that neither technical barriers nor threat of punishment will change people’s online behaviour, they rather suggest a “content leger” or “cultural tax” to be collected through internet providers for pragmatic reasons.

Code Of Conduct

FAIR MUSIC CODE OF CONDUCT

I. What is the fair music code of conduct

The fair music initiative strives for more fairness and justice in the music business. The fair music code of conduct is a instrument of self-obligation for companies active in the process of producing, marketing, distributing and presenting music in all its forms and formats. The code obliges them to comply with the key values of fair music. The fair music code of conduct recognizes the dual character of cultural goods and services that represent a cultural value while at the same time hold an economic dimension. It seems paramount for the music business to take care that the cultural value is not eclipsed by the economic aspect as is usually the case with culture today.

First consensus on contractual standards for the music business confirmed in Frankfurt

First consensus on contractual standards for the music business confirmed in
Frankfurt

The conference in Frankfurt - reality check

At the Frankfurt Music Fair, musicians, label owners, event organisers, operators of
online music services, and special interest groups met to revise the drafts of fair
contractual standards with a reality check, in order to finally apply and establish these
standards. Subjects covered were contractual standards for music recordings, live
performances and online music services.

Contractual standards for music recordings

The standards for music recordings passed the reality check in Frankfurt. Conference
participants were able to finally agree on the most important and controversial clauses of
the contractual standards. A certification of music recordings can thereby be realized in
the near future.
This positions the next big step towards more transparent and fair conditions in the
music business.

fair music - Interview with Eirini Cheimoniti

fair music - Interview with Eirini Cheimoniti

Fair music: Open the horizons

Eirini Cheimoniti is a profound specialist in corporate social responsibility. with mica – music information centre she talked about real and sustainable added value, significant risks and innovation at affordable prices.

As far as you know the initiative "fair music", what do you think of its
main goals?

To my understanding the initiative “fair music” aims to safeguard benefits both for the musicians and the global community: working for the just recognition and remuneration of the musicians as well as for their access to the world markets, it targets the autonomy and independency of musicians. The achievement of these targets clearly implies the achievement of diversity and freedom in music, creating benefits also for the global audiences.

Frank J. Oteri: it is long overdue

It is long overdue!

MICA's Fair Music Initiative, if adopted by the music industry throughout the world (and it should be), is something of a Geneva Convention for composers and musicians; it is long overdue.

Helmut Heuer: a stand for solidarity among labels, musicians and everbyody else

A stand for solidarity among labels, musicians and everbyody else

In a time where the classic value added chain in the independent music business is more and more unbroken by outside powers, it is important to take a stand for solidarity among labels, musicians and everbyody else in the chain so we can keep the doors open for creative variety and act as independently as possible.
